  • Include whole grains, atleast two ounces everyday in a kid’s diet. Whole grains such as rice, wheat, oats etc.
  • Encourage children to drink plenty of water all through the day, and include a variety in children’s menu.

Common health problems in kids are inevitable. But there are sure ways to manage them naturally without medical prescriptions.

Common cold: Honey is the best natural remedy for common cold. Common cold is caused by viruses of different types with annoying symptoms such as stuffy and running nose, cough, sneezes, fever, sore throat and eye irritation. The Antimicrobial properties of honey come as a rescue and minimizes nocturnal coughs and promotes sleep. 2 spoons of honey with one spoon of lemon juice taken three times a day for 3-4 days decreases cold symptoms. Honey is not indicated for infants(kids less than one year age) as it induces infant botulism.

Wheezing: wheezing is children have become quite common and is a lung problems with symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath and tightness around the chest. It is worse in cold climates, and is aggravated by air pollution and allergies. Anti-inflammatory properties of ginger helps to ward off inflammation in the airways and decreases the contraction of the airways. Mix equal amounts of ginger juice, honey and pomegranate juice, one tablespoon of the mixture is to be given three times the day. Ginger candies could help ease the symptoms of Wheezing.

Earaches: Ear problems in childhood are a consequence of constant colds and fluid buildup in the middle ear. The best way to treat ear pain is through olive oil, that works as a lubricant and helps kids get rid of ear infections. 3-4 drops of warm olive oil dispensed in the ear canal softens wax, which could later be removed with cotton swabs.

Toothaches: Common cause of tooth pain in children is dental cavities and tooth decays. Encourage kids to brush and floss the teeth twice a day and asafetida comes as a rescue to treat pain in the teeth. A pinch of powdered asafetida with butter is to be applied on the affected tooth with the help of a cotton swab helps to relieve pain. For older kids, a salt water rinse is also the best remedy. Dissolve half a spoon of table salt with 100 ml warm water, and get the child rinse the mouth thoroughly with the solution.

Stomach Aches: stomach aches are common in kids, this usually happens as a consequence of indigestion, constipation, acid reflux, gas, food poisoning, over eating, stomach infection and so on. Fennel seeds are effective in relieving stomach pain. Add a spoon of crushed fennel seeds in a cup to hot water and steep for about ten minutes. Strain and add half a spoon of honey and feed the child twice a day. Roasted fennel seeds could be chewed after meals to promote digestion.

Coughs: Coughs are common in children and are a sequel of colds, infections and any blockage in the upper respiratory passages. Anti bacterial, anti inflammatory antiviral actions of turmeric taken with milk or honey help relieve cough symptoms. Warm lemonade helps to relieve cough symptoms in children as well.


Health hygiene tips for Children:

Prevention is better than cure; and there is no alternative to this statement. Practicing healthy and hygienic practices in the kids and encouraging them to practice the same helps in preventing a number of health problems. Having good habits at a young age encourages kids to follow it for their lifetime.

Hand washing: This goes hand in hand with overall hygiene. Teach kids to wash their hands before and after meals, after playing with pets, after toilet and after contact with a dirty surface. Hand Sanitizers are not as effective as soap and water.

Bath: Take bath twice a day a routine, though kids hate it. Teach kids on how to cleanse body parts and the importance of keeping themselves clean.

Oral hygiene: clean gums and clean teeth could prevent a range of problems such as dental cavities, bad breath and even heart diseases later in their life. Brushing and flossing oral cavity should be performed twice a day and if possible after every meal. Two minutes of brushing is required to keep the tooth clean.

Nail care: finger nails are always the breeding ground of germs and bacteria. Germs in the nails could get transmitted easily to the eyes, nose and mouth. Cut nails regularly and brush off dirt from under the nails frequently.

Toilet training: after toilet training it is important to teach children the importance of keeping their parts clean. Girl children should be taught to wash or wipe from front to back and wash their hands after they are done.

Tips for parents

As parents, we need to ensure that we offer an absolutely protective environment for our children, in our home, cars, outdoors and at the places we take our kids. Get frequent check ups for kids to the pediatricion and vaccinate them as needed. Provide healthy foods for kids and encourage them to lead an active life. Monitor children activities and teach healthy habits. Most of all provide and promote a loving and caring atmosphere at home and at school so that kids grow up as confident individuals.
